The Shades Of Blue concert series kicks off 2016 with a great show on Saturday, February 13, featuring Samirah Evans and Evelyn Harris singing the works of Etta James and Nina Simone.
Evans is a powerful singer who made her mark quickly in Brattleboro after she relocated from New Orleans, where she had performed regularly and had hosted a popular radio show on the legendary WWOZ. Her monthly “Sam’s Set And Shed” events on Elliott Street in Brattleboro attracted the cream of the area musicians, including the Neville Brothers’ Charles Neville, and gave young musicians a place to jam and be mentored in a supportive environment.
When approached about doing a show at NextStage Evans had already been thinking of partnering with Evelyn Harris, a former member of the Grammy Award winning a cappella group “Sweet Honey In The Rock”. She and Evans had previously partnered on a popular “Ladies In Jazz” concert series. Backing them at NextStage will be some of Evans’ “Handsome Devils”, including pianist Miro Sprague, who just finished studying at the Thelonius Monk Institute under the guidance of Herbie Hancock and other jazz luminaries. Evans and Harris will surely bring the material of Etta James and Nina Simone to life, while adding some unique twists of their own. It is a show not to be missed.
